Best Library Conversation of the Year

This just happened and I HAD to share. A little girl just approached the desk and we had this little chat:

LG: Can I have a piece of paper?
ME: Sure. (I give her an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of scratch paper with a little printing on the back)
LG: I don't want this one. There's stuff on it.
ME: Yes, but it's free!
LG: I want one of those clean pieces.
ME: Those aren't free.
LG: They gave me one before.
ME: Well, they were being nice. I'm mean.
LG: Are you mean to your kids?
ME: I don't have any kids?
LG: You don't! Do you have a dad?
ME: I do.
LG: Do you have a husband?
ME: Nope.
LG: Why not?
ME: Probably because I'm mean.
LG: Well then why did Jesus make you?
ME: He probably wants me to be nice.
LG: My mom is mean.
ME: I seriously doubt that. I'm sure she is really nice.
LG: No. She's mean.
ME: Well, I'm sure we are both trying.
LG: I guess. (And off she skips with her piece of scratch paper.)

Absolutely made my day.

I'm pretty sure mean moms are actually good moms. Thus, mean librarians are good as well. If that logic doesn't work for you, then you can just deduce that you will be a brilliant mom.

LOVE this!!! Librarians always scared me as a kid - I wouldn't have even dared to ask for a piece of paper!

You seem really secure about your meanness. =)

loved this story! I think your patron stories are better than my customer stories.

I was waiting for this to end in "And no, you can't see Santa."

Oh, that will never get old!

I agree with Bre - you seem to be rather proud of your meanness. Why is that?
